Prof. Godfrey Baldacchino PhD

Full Professor of Sociology, University of Malta

Dr. Godfrey Baldacchino, PhD (Warwick, UK), BA, PGCE, MA, is a distinguished Full Professor of Sociology at the University of Malta, Malta. He also holds the prestigious position of Malta's Ambassador-at-Large for Islands and Small States. 

Previously, Dr. Baldacchino served as the Canada Research Chair in Island Studies and later as the UNESCO Co-Chair in Island Studies and Sustainability at the University of Prince Edward Island, Canada (2003-2013; 2016-2020). He played a pivotal role as a founding board member of the Commonwealth Centre for Connected Learning (3CL) and currently serves as the Editor Emeritus of the Island Studies Journal (ISSN: 1715-2593) and Editor of the Small States & Territories Journal (ISSN: 2616-8006). Furthermore, he served as the President of the International Small Islands Studies Association (ISISA) from 2014 to 2022. In recognition of his contributions to the field, he received honorary membership in the Astronomical Society of Malta in October 2014.

Throughout his career, Dr. Baldacchino has successfully secured approximately five million euros in research funding, both individually and collaboratively. His funding sources primarily include the European Commission and the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC). He has also held visiting professorships at esteemed universities in Australia, Barbados, Fiji, France, Iceland, Japan, Mauritius, Seychelles, Spain, Sweden, and the USA.

Dr. Baldacchino is an accomplished author, co-author, editor, and co-editor of around 60 books and monographs, encompassing publications in Malta as well as by renowned international publishers such as Berghahn Books, The Commonwealth Secretariat, Routledge, Island Studies Press, Memorial University Press, McGill-Queen's University Press, Palgrave Macmillan, Springer, Edward Elgar, and Rowman & Littlefield International. Additionally, he has contributed as an author and co-author to approximately 180 peer-reviewed articles, with his work appearing in esteemed journals such as Annals of Tourism Research, Political Geography, The Round Table, Island Studies Journal, and Journal of Small Business & Entrepreneurship.

Dr. Baldacchino holds positions on the international advisory boards or editorial boards of various academic journals, including The Round Table (Taylor & Francis), Asia Pacific Viewpoint (Wiley-Blackwell), Journal of Small Business & Entrepreneurship (Taylor & Francis), Journal of Marine & Island Cultures (Elsevier), Miscellanea Geographica: Regional Studies on Development (De Gruyter), Okinawan Journal of Island Studies (University of the Ryukyus, Japan), and XJENZA: Journal of Malta Chamber of Scientists (Malta).

Furthermore, Dr. Baldacchino has served as an external examiner for 12 PhD theses at universities in Australia, Fiji, Finland, Mauritius, the Netherlands, South Africa, and the United Kingdom. His expertise and contributions extend to various corners of the globe, making him a highly respected figure in the field of island studies and sociology.
