Prof Ing Charles Yousif

Associate Professor, Institute for Sustainable Energy, University of Malta

Prof. Ing. Charles Yousif is an accomplished Mechanical Engineer with an extensive background in the field of sustainable energy. He graduated as a Mechanical Engineer in 1989 and obtained an M.Phil. Degree in 1995, focusing on the performance of solar photovoltaic systems. In 2015, he received his PhD degree in the energy performance of buildings.

Prof. Ing. Yousif has been working as an Assistant Lecturer at the Institute for Sustainable Energy, University of Malta, for over 20 years. He was promoted to the position of Lecturer in 2015, Senior Lecturer in 2017, and Associate Professor in 2020.

He is a co-author of 9 books and has published over 120 local and international scientific papers and articles that mainly concentrate on the energy performance of buildings, solar photovoltaic systems, solar water heating, hybrid systems, energy audits, renewable energy policies and education, shallow ground geothermal systems, and UV radiation.

He serves as a consultant to many governmental bodies on deep renovation of existing public authority buildings. Prof. Ing. Yousif is Malta’s pioneer in testing some of the first installed photovoltaic systems, as well as solar and UV radiation monitoring and ground temperature analysis. He is currently coordinating the University’s training course for certifying solar installers in Malta and designing nearly zero-energy buildings, primarily aimed at practising engineers and architects.

Throughout his career, he has participated in many EU and locally-funded projects.

Within the area of NGOs, Prof. Ing. Yousif is a Founder Member and Secretary General of the Malta Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energies Association (M.E.E.R.E.A.). He is a member of several international associations on solar energy and energy economics, the Chamber of Engineers, and the Climate Change Platform at the University of Malta.
